“The Concept of Mind: An Update”
Workshop on Ordinary Language Philosophy and the Philosophy of Mind
Workshop date: Thursday, March 16, 2023, 1-6 pm, Pacific Daylight Time
Workshop venue: University of California at Riverside (room: INTS 1109) and on Zoom.
At a time when naturalism is dominant in philosophy, ordinary language philosophy is still often seen as the relic of a by-gone age. Having failed to catch up with cognitive science, its philosophy of mind would seem to be irrelevant. The aim of this workshop is to show, by reading the work of Gilbert Ryle and Ludwig Wittgenstein closely, that this is not so. Ordinary language philosophy has much to contribute to contemporary philosophy of mind.
Workshop program:
1:00-2:30 Michael Kremer, University of Chicago
"What was Ryle's 'concept of mind’?"
2:40-4:10: Brice Bantegnie, UC Riverside/University of Southampton
"On the reception of Ryle's work by philosophers of mind: a misunderstanding"
4:30-6:00: Erich Reck, UC Riverside
“The source and significance of Wittgenstein’s anti-psychologism“
Workshop organizer: Brice Bantegnie, UCR
This workshop is part of the activities of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Global Postdoctoral Fellowship project UNIPHIMIND. It is funded by the UKRI Postdoctoral Fellowships Guarantee
